Rights organisation Amnesty International is demanding a full war crimes investigation into a brutal assault carried out by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Zamzam displaced persons camp in North Darfur earlier this year.
In a report released on Wednesday, the NGO documented harrowing accounts of atrocities committed during the large-scale attack, including indiscriminate killings, mass rape, and other violations. The RSF has faced repeated accusations of war crimes since its conflict with Sudan’s military government erupted in April 2023.
The assault on the famine-stricken camp occurred as RSF forces laid siege to el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. The paramilitary group now holds full control of the state and is advancing further east into West Kordofan, worsening displacement across the region.
According to Amnesty International, the attacks on Zamzam camp — the largest internally displaced persons camp in North Darfur — took place between April 11 and 13. RSF fighters allegedly deployed explosives in populated zones and fired indiscriminately into residential areas.
The report includes multiple testimonies describing lethal assaults on civilians. Witnesses recounted seeing RSF fighters fatally shoot at least 47 civilians as they hid in their homes, attempted to flee, or sought refuge inside a mosque.
“The RSF’s horrific and deliberate assault on desperate, hungry civilians in Zamzam camp laid bare once again its alarming disregard for human life,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary-General.
“Civilians were ruthlessly attacked, killed, robbed of items essential to their survival and livelihoods, and left without any path to justice.”
Amnesty International further reports that RSF fighters burned homes and buildings, committed acts “that may amount to rape and pillage,” and triggered an estimated 400,000 people to flee the camp within just two days.
The organisation is calling on the international community to support an urgent, impartial investigation into the attacks, warning that continued impunity will only fuel further atrocities.
