Observers Caution Against Mahama Third-term Agenda.

Concerns have been raised over growing public discussions about a possible third-term bid for President John Dramani Mahama following the outcome of Ghana’s 2024 general elections.

The election results, which handed the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) a strong parliamentary majority, have been described by commentators as a critical moment for the country’s constitutional democracy. While the majority gives the executive significant authority, analysts warn that such power must be exercised with restraint to avoid undermining democratic institutions.

Historical precedents have been cited as cautionary examples, including the era of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, when overwhelming parliamentary dominance weakened democratic checks and balances. Similar developments in parts of Africa have also been referenced, with constitutional manipulation in some countries contributing to political instability and unrest.

In Ghana, discussions—particularly on social media and among some traditional and religious leaders—about a possible third-term ambition for President Mahama have sparked concern. Although President Mahama has publicly stated that he does not intend to seek a third term, observers argue that continued public debate on the issue could fuel uncertainty and tension.

Commentators stress that the media has a crucial role to play in safeguarding democracy, especially at a time when public confidence in state institutions such as the legislature and judiciary is being tested. They argue that the press must remain vigilant, impartial, and committed to holding those in power accountable.

Calls have also been directed at the NDC leadership to discourage any further discussion around a third-term agenda, warning that attempts to stretch constitutional limits could have long-term consequences for political stability.

Observers maintain that Ghana’s democratic strength lies in strict adherence to the constitution and respect for term limits, which have helped sustain the country’s democratic order for more than three decades.
