Ghana Women’s Premier League Match Between Jonina Ladies and Hasaacas Ladies Postponed After Team’s Road Accident

The Matchday 2 fixture of the Ghana Women’s Premier League between Jonina Ladies and Hasaacas Ladies has been postponed following a motor accident involving the Jonina Ladies team bus.

The incident occurred on Saturday along the Accra–Takoradi Highway as the team was traveling to Takoradi to face the former league champions in their first game of the season at Kobby’s AstroTurf.

According to reports, several players sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. Their team bus was left immobilized in the middle of the road after the crash, disrupting the journey and leaving the team stranded.

Players Yet to Recover from Trauma

Although reports initially suggested that the match had been rescheduled for Sunday at 10:00 a.m., sources close to Jonina Ladies say many players are still traumatized and unfit to play.

“We will need at least one week to recover, but the authorities are insisting we play on Sunday morning,” a team official told Onua Sports. “They even threatened to award the points to Hasaacas Ladies if we fail to show up.”

The players, still shaken by the near-fatal experience, are appealing for a longer recovery period to ensure their physical and mental well-being before returning to the pitch.

GFA and League Authorities Urged to Prioritize Player Welfare

The development has sparked concern among fans and sports stakeholders, who are calling on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Women’s Premier League Board to prioritize player safety and welfare over competitive scheduling.

Many have emphasized the need for proper trauma recovery protocols following road accidents, especially for athletes who endure both physical injuries and emotional distress.

Authorities are expected to issue an official statement on the new match date and recovery support for Jonina Ladies in the coming days.
