Two people are alleged to have been shot dead by police during a violent protest against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in Abosso in Ghana’s Western Region.
The incident reportedly occurred when residents took to the streets to protest the environmental destruction and loss of livelihoods caused by ongoing illegal mining activities in the area. The demonstration, which initially began as a peaceful protest, later escalated, prompting a heavy security response.
Eyewitnesses claim that tensions rose after police attempted to disperse the crowd, during which gunshots were allegedly fired. Two individuals were said to have died at the scene, though their identities have not yet been officially confirmed.
The reported deaths have sparked fear, anger, and outrage within the community, with residents and civil society groups calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the police action.
Security authorities have acknowledged the incident and stated that they are reviewing the situation while working to restore calm and maintain order in the area.
Further details are expected as investigations continue.
