Accra–Tema Motorway Expansion Hits 30% Completion Amid Safety Concerns from Commuters and Residents

Reconstruction and expansion works on the Accra–Tema Motorway have reached 30% completion, according to engineers from the construction firm overseeing the project. A site visit on Friday afternoon revealed active excavation, drainage works, and foundation construction for key interchanges along the 19.5-kilometre corridor.

Originally built in 1965 under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the motorway is being upgraded from a 4-lane dual carriageway into a 10-lane modern expressway featuring service roads, pedestrian bridges, new interchanges, and improved lighting and drainage systems.

Safety Concerns in MANET–Adjiringanor Stretch

While progress continues, residents and commuters in the MANET-Adjiringanor enclave are raising alarms over increased danger to pedestrians. With no temporary crossing infrastructure in place, people are forced to dash across the highway, risking fatal accidents.

“Almost every week, someone gets hit. There are no pedestrian signs, no bridges—nothing,” one concerned resident told reporters. “People are literally running across the road to survive.”

Several residents are calling on the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the contractors to install temporary footbridges, clear signage, and possibly assign traffic marshals during peak hours.

Commuter Frustrations Mount

Drivers have also expressed dissatisfaction with traffic congestion and dusty diversion routes, which they say contribute to longer commute times.

“It takes us almost two hours to move from Tetteh Quarshie to Tema,” said a commercial driver. “The temporary routes are rough and need better surfacing.”

A resident engineer confirmed off-camera that steps were being taken to improve detour conditions and enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety during construction.

Major Components of the Upgrade

Key features of the Accra–Tema Motorway upgrade include:

  • Expansion to 10 lanes (main expressway + service roads)

  • Remodelling of the Tetteh Quarshie, Apenkwa, and Achimota interchanges

  • Construction of 5 new interchanges, including one at the MANET section

  • Development of pedestrian footbridges

  • Installation of street lighting and reflective barriers

  • Upgraded drainage systems for flood control

The completed expressway is expected to drastically reduce travel time, boost logistics efficiency, and improve road safety along Ghana’s busiest highway.

Public Calls for Interim Safety Measures

Despite supporting the modernization effort, residents are urging the government to act quickly on temporary safety interventions.

“We are happy about the development,” one commuter said, “but lives are being endangered daily. We don’t want to wait until tragedy strikes.”

The Accra–Tema Motorway Expansion Project, once complete, will mark one of Ghana’s most ambitious road infrastructure initiatives in decades—linking the capital to its largest port city through a world-class expressway.
