Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Hamza Suhuyini, has criticised the University of Ghana (UG) for its decision to maintain the existing admission cut-off points for the 2025/2026 academic year, calling the move “extremely unacceptable” in light of the steep drop in this year’s WASSCE performance.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, December 3, Suhuyini said the unusually poor performance in the 2025 WASSCE requires universities to show greater flexibility to avoid shutting out capable students.
“The UG’s decision not to increase their cut-off point is extremely unacceptable. I think the universities need to be flexible. It is possible that this failure could be due to factors beyond the students themselves,” he said.
He warned that rigid admission thresholds could deny many deserving students access to tertiary education and urged the University of Ghana to adjust the required aggregates for affected programmes.
“Instead of maintaining an aggregate 8 in certain courses, UG should consider reviewing it — possibly moving it from aggregate 8 to 10,” he suggested.
Suhuyini argued that even if previous cohorts performed well under stricter cut-off points, the current academic landscape — shaped by widespread declines in performance — demands a temporary adjustment to ensure fairness.
This year’s 2025 WASSCE results revealed a major drop in performance, with Core Mathematics recording the steepest decline. A1–C6 passes fell from 305,132 in 2024 to 209,068 in 2025, a reduction of more than 96,000 passes. The overall pass rate dropped to 48.73%, leaving more than half of candidates below the minimum grades required for university entry.
Additionally, nearly one in four candidates failed both Core Mathematics and Social Studies, raising concerns about the number of students who will qualify for tertiary admission in the 2025/2026 academic year.
