FIFA Probes Alleged Use of Ineligible Players by DR Congo in World Cup Qualifiers

FIFA has reportedly opened an investigation into allegations that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) fielded ineligible players during the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a development that could potentially revive Nigeria’s qualification hopes.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were knocked out of the qualification race after losing to DR Congo on penalties in a decisive playoff match for Africa’s intercontinental qualifying spot. The encounter ended 1–1 after extra time, before DR Congo edged the shootout.

However, the result has come under scrutiny following claims that several players in the DR Congo squad did not meet FIFA’s eligibility requirements.

According to reports, the investigation is focusing on concerns that up to nine players may have switched national allegiance without fully completing the legal and administrative processes required under both Congolese law and FIFA regulations.

DR Congo is known not to formally recognise dual citizenship, raising questions about whether players who had acquired other nationalities properly renounced them before representing the country. FIFA rules require players changing national teams to comply with both domestic laws and FIFA statutes.

Additionally, officials are reportedly examining the documentation of at least one player who had previously declined an international call-up, further intensifying the eligibility concerns.

If FIFA confirms any breaches of its regulations, possible sanctions could include match forfeitures or other disciplinary measures, depending on the severity of the violations.

For Nigeria, the investigation presents a possible lifeline, as any adverse ruling against DR Congo could reopen the Super Eagles’ path to qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
