AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has expressed hope that the club will retain Ghana international Antoine Semenyo, despite growing speculation linking the winger with a move away in the January transfer window.
Semenyo, who has a reported £65 million release clause, has been strongly linked with a potential switch to Manchester City, following his impressive performances for the Cherries.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Bournemouth’s Premier League clash against Brentford on December 27, Iraola admitted uncertainty over the player’s future but stressed his importance to the team.
“You never know what is going to happen,” Iraola said. “In the summer there were a lot of movements, and I don’t know what will happen in the winter. As a coach, I can only say I hope we don’t lose him because he is very important for us.”
The Spanish coach praised Semenyo’s consistency, noting that his influence extends beyond goals and assists. According to Iraola, the 25-year-old has delivered strong performances since the start of the season, even in matches where he has not found the net.
“Antoine has been performing very well, not just in the last two games where he scored. Even when he doesn’t score, he still adds great value to the team,” Iraola added.
Semenyo is expected to retain his place in the starting lineup when Bournemouth travel to the Gtech Community Stadium to face Brentford.
Since joining Bournemouth in 2023, the Ghanaian forward has recorded 28 goals and 10 assists in 97 Premier League appearances, establishing himself as a key figure in the club’s attacking setup.
