The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) task force has arrested 36 illegal miners during a late-night operation at Osino, in the Fanteakwa South District of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
According to officials, 32 of the suspects are foreign nationals from Niger, while four are Ghanaians. The arrests were part of ongoing efforts by security forces to curb the rising menace of galamsey (illegal mining), which continues to threaten Ghana’s natural resources and water bodies.
During the raid, the NAIMOS task force seized several mining tools and machinery, and successfully dispersed a group of machete-wielding men who attempted to resist arrest.
In a separate operation in the Birim North District, several other illegal miners were also apprehended as part of the nationwide crackdown.
Intensified Anti-Galamsey Operations
The suspects are currently in police custody and will soon be arraigned before court as investigations continue.
Speaking after the operation, the Eastern Regional National Security Liaison Officer, Mr. Francis Annor Dompreh, stated that the anti-illegal mining campaign will continue relentlessly until all unauthorized mining operations are halted.
“We will not rest until every illegal miner is brought to justice. This exercise will continue unabated to protect Ghana’s environment and water resources,” he emphasized.
The NAIMOS task force has vowed to sustain regular monitoring and intelligence-led operations across all illegal mining hotspots in the region.
The government’s ongoing war against galamsey seeks to restore degraded lands, safeguard rivers, and ensure that responsible mining practices are strictly enforced in Ghana’s mining communities.
